[[underlined]] Rabbit Hole Basin. [[/underlined]]

[[underlined]] July 6 [[underlined]] Continued down gulch 6 miles to Rabbit Hole Spr., then on west across wide valley and playa of Rabbit Hole Lake and out over west rim and down to Black Rock Desert, or the immense Lahontin playa so called. Followed S.W. along edge of valley to Hot Springs and camped.

Came 30 miles or a little more. Good road. Course nearly due west.

Aneroid at camp in gulch 5000, at Rabbit Hole Spr. 4600, first playa 4400, west rim of basin 4600, Black Rock Desert, bottom of playa, 4200, Hot Springs 4250.

From camp down the country is all Sonoran with some Lower Sonoran plants in the bottoms of the valleys. Sarcobatus baileyi is one of the most abundant shrubs. Dalea glandulosa and Atriplex lentiformis are common in Black Rock valley at edge of playa. The flora is mainly Upper Sonoran with a trace of Lower.

The country is very barren and arid The mts. are steep, treeless & almost waterless and the great yellow playas give a strong desert look to the country. The dry, smooth, mud flats are like a mosaic floor. The wagon rolls over them with scarcely a sign of draft.
