A mile east of Bieber we strike the pine forest that comes down to edge of Big Valley on the south west side and climbed over a high, forest covered lava ridge and down to Fall River Valley. Aneroid read 4250 at morning camp, 4200 at Bieber, 5100 on top of ridge, 34 ^[[00]] at Pittville & at camp. Met a lot of new plants on the ridge, Pinus lambertiana, Abies (grandis?), Pseudotsuga, Quercus californica & Q. garreyana, Cercocarpus parvifolius, Rhamnus, 3 species of Ceanothus, Celtis, Rhus trilobata, the last few species low down on the west slope. [[underlined]] Fall river valley [[/underlined]] is evidently Sonoran though Transition covers the ridges around. It is a farming valley and looks green from the hills. Alfalfa & hay are the principal crops, some fruit orchards are seen, mostly apples & peaches. Saw Sciurus californicus, Tamias aemenus & senex & Spermophilus douglass, heard a Sciurus fossor
