Sir:

For the purpose of enabling the Indian Bureau to obtain a complete series of specimens illustrating the life and character of the Indians of Puget Sound and the adjacent region for exhibition in the proposed display at the Centennial, Mr. James G. Swan was appointed by the Interior Department to superintend the work and a sum of money amounting to $10,000 was set aside from the Centennial appropriation to meet his expenses. His pay was fixed at $200 a month and was to continue till the first of December with the understanding that it
