I was able to obtain for them some few rations from the Bureau officers, though of late these in consequence of orders received, have been withheld.

It seems right that some common humanity should be exercised by the parent government. These suffering poor, & almost starving ones, ought to receive a little food, that they may live. 

I learn that within a few days some instructions have been sent by you to give rations to the poor whites. I fear that the order is not understood. Some very precise directions are needed. The poor are many & very needy. Pardon me for this brief note. I am at present laboring here in behalf of the American Unitarian Association of Boston. I have turned my attention chiefly
