[[blank page]] [[start page]] [[end page]] [[underlined]] Near Downieville [[/underlined]] At the [[underlined]] Mountain House [[/underlined]] (4500 feet) we begin to descend a continuous 5 mile grade that cuts into a steep east slope down to the N. Yuba R 4 miles below Downieville at 2700 feet. This is a forest & brush covered slope with numerous cold, N.E. gulches & beautiful little streams. In places the Philadelphys bushes are loaded with flowers that load the air with fragrance. Camped in gulch half a mile from [[underlined]] N. Yuba R. [[/underlined]]. bCame only 14 miles. [[underlined]] June 23 [[/underlined]] Remained at camp in gulch writing up notes & doing various left over pieces of work while the horses backs rested & got sound. [[underlined]] June 24. Sunday. [[/underlined]] Went to near head of [[underlined]] Woodruff Gulch [[/underlined]] up good trail to old mine. Found Cinclus, Cyanocitta nest, Blue grouse with young as big as doves, & saw the little winter wren. Saw deer tracks & Thomomys hills. No chipmunks.
