[[underline]] July 22 [[/underline]] Went down to [[?Gilmores?]] at mouth of [[underline]] Espirito Santo Creek [[/underline]] to see Mr. P.B. Otero, the fish & game warden of New Mex. who gave me a permit to collect deer, turkey, & grouse. Had an interesting talk with him & got some good notes. He says a large Jaguar was killed a few months ago not far from here & the skin was sent to his brother, Gov. Otero. He knows where one other was killed in New Mex. & where one was seen lately near [[pencil underline]] Cow Spring [[/pencil underline]] not far from [[pencil underline]] Glorieta [[pencil underline]], a short time ago. Says he will send us full notes on these with measurements of the skin on his brothers floor.

I felt well repaid for a long days ride, about 40 miles & 4000 feet down & up again. Got back to camp just before sundown. The thrushes sing about our camp so constantly in morning & evening we decided to call it [[underline]] Hylocicla [[/underline]] Camp. Regulus calendula also sings over our breakfast table.
