[[line]]

According to Professor Meyer Schapiro, see his letter of April 15, 1952, he traces back the subject of the Redon drawing "Centaur" with bass violin to a Pompeian painting representing the Centaur Chiron [[strikethrough]]teaching[[/strikethrough]] teaching Achilles to play the lyre, and in a Greek writer, of the Roman period, Philostratus (who described painting) there is an account of a picture of Chiron and Achilles in which it is said that the [[strikethrough]]lyre[[/strikethrough]] eye of the Centaur is ^[[gentle]] because he has become cultured through music.

The bass violin is of course a modern interpretation of the musical instrument.

Please have this added to the description of the Centaur.
