Dear Professor Schapiro,

This mornings mail conveys the news that you will receive shortly the Alexander Hamilton Award, and I am anxious for you to know that I am indeed distressed at the thought of not being able to attend that ceremony.

My health, unfortunately, for the past two years has caused me to limit my activities, and I regret this all the more as I would have been so happy to be able to be among those who will congratulate you on this very special occasion.

Our relationship, as you will recall, goes back a great many years and my admiration of your accomplishments in so many fields of art also goes back to the very first years I had the privilege of meeting you.

Thus, if not present in person, my thoughts will be with you, applauding from afar the granting of this new laurel.

With warm regards,

Yours,

Germain Seligman
