MEYER SCHAPIRO '24

Widely considered to be the most brilliant art historian in the country, Meyer Schapiro was born in Lithuania in 1904 and came to the United States at the age of 3. He has been at Columbia since 1920, when he entered Columbia College. He earned the B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. at Columbia and joined the Department of Art History and Archaeology as a lecturer in 1928. He became a full professor in 1952 and attained the University's highest academic rank in 1964, when he was named University Professor. Named University Professor Emeritus in 1973, he continues to lecture at Columbia.

A multi-faceted scholar and public lecturer, he is expert in early Christian, Byzantine, medieval and modern art, and in the theory and philosophy of art. During his long career, he has produced a panoply of art criticism, research articles, scholarly volumes and books for the lay reader in these fields; he has also contributed to studies in neighboring fields, including anthropology, psychology and sociology. Known perhaps foremost as a teacher, Prof. Schapiro recently received an unprecedented accolade from close friends and former students who are now prominent artists. The artists - Stanley William Hayter, Jasper Johns, Ellsworth, Kelly, Alexander Liberman, Roy Lichtenstein, Andre Masson, Robert Motherwell, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, Saul Steinberg, Frank Stella and Andy Warhol - created a numbered set of portfolios of original lithographs, etchings and silk screens, to help endow a proposed Meyer Schapiro Chair in the Department of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia.
