Swift Island Montgomery County N.C. the 18^th May 1867

Gen. Daniel E Sickles Sir I See that the United State goverment is Sending out Supplies to the poore and distressed throughout the South to aid in Sustaining life and to assist them in making the present crop it is giving grate Relief and I would like to have Some information on this Subject believing as I do that you are in possesion of all necessary for me to know on this point I wright you for the information. first are the Officers of the government allowed to let out provisions to persons Tilling the Soil but have Spent all the funds and have a large number of laborers of both white and collored who are entirely dependant on their imployer for their daily bread and Supplies of every discription. This grate change in our coutry has left manny good honist farmers and manufactoring Gentleman verry much imburst and Some of them have a large number of both [[Secks]], and collared imployed and Some of us have bin Runing for near two years in order to Sustain life Not for him Self but his operatives and Some of us have Spent the last funds we can controle and will Soone bi compelled to Shut down Factorys and give up our farms for want of Supplies and turn loose hundred of persons to look out for them Selves for bread.
