Warrenton N.C. July 17th 1867.

To
Col. Nelson A Miles
Brevet Major Gen.
Assistant Commissioner
Raleigh N.C.

General,
I have the honor to state, that since the 15th of Nov 1865, I have been teaching a school for freedmen at Warrenton, N.C.; in which the people of that place, think much good has been done, and of which they speak well.

Owing to the extreme poverty of the colored people here, and the failure of crops last year, I have not been able to defray the expenses of said school, I respectfully ask therefore that the sum of one hundred ($100.) dollars be appropriated from the funds of the Bureau, to pay the rent of the School house for the last year; also that an appropriation of one hundred dollars ($100.) be made to repair the school house for the coming session.

I have the honor to be Very Respectfully
Your Obedient Servant.
Wm Cawthorn
