At the risk of being thought importunate I would respectfully urge that if the vacancy about to take place at Beaufort, Carteret Co. by Major Dillons muster out, be not filled, you would confer it on me - as having suffered severely from Ague this past season I believe that the sea air would brace my constitution again, which reason will I trust plead my apology for suggesting any place, altho of course anywhere that you deem my services of most importance will be acceptable.
In conclusion I would beg you to return me the enclosures when perfectly finished with them and assuring you that should ^[you] honor me with a situation, no efforts on my part shall be wanting to prove that your confidence has not been misplaced.
