Dear Sir

My preparations are all made for leaving here tomorrow and before leaving I feel that I ought to express to you my grateful appreciation of your kindness in your prompt attention to my request regarding "transportation" for the freedman who will go out under my charge & protection. I annoyed you in that matter more than I wished to do; and really think the bureau has been liberal and kind. 'Tis true the benefits resulting will not ensure nicety to any one but the true freedoms themselves. But still I regard it as a kindness to myself - for they will be more efficient as laborers than if they had
