April the 29th 1867

To the Honorable Jesse D.E. Sickles,

Dear Sir
Having tended a crop with Solomon Burton, and he having a disposition to defraud me I could see no better than to give you a statement of the case. I was hired to said Burton at the time of the surrender for 1 fourth of the crop. At the time of the surrender I had not planted any corn but Burton stated that if I would remain with him he would give me one fourth of the crop. But he has failed to do so. From some cause or other the statement is as follows

Raised 365 Bu Corn
Raised 40 Bu Potatoes
About 50 Gallons Molasses

I have had only 30 bushels of corn and 3 bushels potatoes.
If you can assist me in this matter I will be under many obligations.
Respectfully yours, Gerry Thomas
