a colorful sunset. If one didn't bother to look, one would have missed all the different tones of gray and blue in the rippling water, the distant land, and the clouded sky beyond, or the black silhouettes of the sailboats skirting across the waters of the harbor, outline so distinctly against the sparkling background of distant lake when the sun would occasionally blaze through a slit in the clouds. It was marvelous, dearest, and I can't wait for those blessed days to come when we can appreciate these things together, finding new beauty everywhere and teaching each other to see it. ...... As for my work, we are flat on our backs without a blessed thing to do until about Thursday when the rush commences again with about five locos coming in at once. My battleship will be afloat by the end of the week, I presume. Until it comes, I'm to begin the testing of a new locomotive, the "Toledo & Western," and break a new man in on it so he can take it when the superdreadnaught returns to us. Ken is staying over until tomorrow with me, we not being obliged to work on Labor Day thanks only to the fact that Saturday morning the first New York Central passenger loco couldn't negotiate the curve on the way from the erecting shop to us, and before they could stop it, tore some of the brake rigging loose and tightened up some cables, necessitating a return to the shop for a couple of days. That incident is the only thing that kept us from working Labor Day. I'm sending you a clipping that shows the scene of our labors. ...... Just as soon as Mother goes, I'm going to write a lot of letters, taking a couple of evenings off for that express purpose.
