[[underlined]] Manzano Mts. [[/underlined]]

[[underlined]] July 30 [[/underlined]], Got up early & started up the Mts. at 5. Leaving Dunn's Mill I followed a lumber road NW. up the gulch through open [[red checkmark]] [underlined]] yellow pine [[/underlined]] timber about 2 miles to narrow part of gulch, where [[red checkmark]] [underlined]] Abies concolor [[/underlined]], [[red checkmark]] [underlined]] Populus tremuloides [[/underlined]] and [[red checkmark]] [underlined]] Acer glabrum [[/underlined]] begin on the cold slope at 8000 feet. On hot slopes they begin at about 9000. The first douglas, spruce ^ [[insertion]] [[red checkmark]] Pseudotsuga taxifolia [[/insertion]] were seen at 8400 feet and they reach the top of the peake at 10000 while [[red checkmark]] [[underlined]] Abies concolor [[/underlined]] stops some 400 feet short of the top.It rained and was cloudy or foggy all the time I was on the Mts. so I could not see far, but went up a peak said to be as high or almost as high as any. The aneroid read 10000 feet on top, 9600 feet on top of main ridge. The east slope is heavily timbered with [[underlined]] [[strikethrough]] sp [[/strikethrough]] [[red checkmark]] douglas, [[/underlined]] [[red checkmark]] [[underlined]] spruce, [[/underlnied]] [[insertion]] [[red checkmark]] Abies concolor [[/insertion]] [[underlined]] balsam [[/underlined]], [[underlined]] Pinus flexilis [[/underlined]] [[insertion]] [[red checkmark]] P. tremuloides [[/insertion]] & [[underlined]] Aspens [[/insertion]] except where fire has swept over & thickets of [[insertion]] [[red checkmark]] Quercus gambeli [[/insertion]] [[underlined]] oak [[/underlined]] have come up. There are many springs and a small ceek in the gulch we went up. Grass & weeds are luxurient.
