There is an old irrigation ditch along each side of the Chaco Canyon floor, apparently to catch the water that came in over the side slopes and carry it to fields. There was evidently more timber and probably more water in the days of the pueblo & thousands of people must have occupied the valley at one time. These ditches probably also reached to a series of lake basins just east of La Mahara Butte, now dry, but with a slightly more humid climate probably serving as ample reservoirs for the Chaco valley.

The La Majara Butte stands apparently 600 or 800 feet high at the gap of the canyon about 3 miles above the pueblo, a regular Enchanted Mesa and probably full of long lost enchantments. It is rather a peak than a mesa, with a narrow top that could be reached only by a hard climb up some narrow grooves.

Transcription Notes:
Chaco Canyon is now a National Historic Park. Cannot find a "La Mahara/Majara Butte" - maybe it's the one now called Fajada Butte?
