Company, of the market value at the time of my death, of two hundred thousand dollars ($200,000). The cash dividends on said stock, or the income derived from the proceeds of the sale thereof, shall be used by the Regents of said Institution solely for the purpose of hiring a competent curator whose first service shall be the faithful oversight, intelligent exhibition, and careful protection of the collections transferred by me by deed of gift or bills of sale or bequeathed by this will to said Institution."

It has not as yet been found practicable to secure the services of an individual with the qualities demanded for the Curatorship of the Freer Gallery of Art as outlined by its Founder; and at present there is no one in view for the position. In view of this, and of the fact -

(a) that the collections are now being unpacked to be placed in the storage and exhibition rooms of the Freer Gallery of Art; and in order -

(b) that steps may be taken to secure the services of two or more individuals in an advisory or temporary working capacity, the combined efforts of whom would give the practical results of a full curator, the following resolution is submitted for the Board's consideration:-

RESOLVED; That the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, with the approval of the Permanent Committee, be and is hereby authorized to carry into effect the provisions of Section 18 by employing under temporary appointments such advisers and assistants as may be necessary to secure "faithful oversight, intelligent exhibition and careful protection of the collections" in the Freer Gallery of Art, and to pay for such services from the income provided for a curator.

The Secretary explained further that the position had been offered to Mr. John E. Lodge, of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, who had declined, but who had consented to give a temporary oversight to the affairs of the Gallery until the final selection had been made.

The Vice President suggested that the matter might be arranged by the strictly temporary appointment of a person under a contract, who would receive the full income of this fund, but who would apply only a portion of it for his personal services, and agree to pay the remainder to an assistant or assistants. After some further discussion, the Vice President submitted the following resolution:

RESOLVED; That the Secretary be authorized to temporarily hire, for the full income, a competent curator whose first service shall be the faithful
