QUESTIONS OF THE LESSON

1. How did Jesus help Zacchaeus?
2. In what way did Jesus change people's lives?
3. Why did Jesus come to this world?
4. What was the scope of Jesus' work?

Lights on the Lesson

By Rev. Bernard Byrd, D. D.
LIGHT NO. 1--(Isaiah 53) Sin placed upon man a burden which he could not bear. When any affliction is unbearable to a man, it generally results in death. Jesus came to bear the things we could not.

LIGHT NO. 2--(Matthew) A purpose in Christ was not only to save man in the end, but to make it possible for man to be released from the sins which vex him day by day.

(a) All of man's efforts in pleasing God left empty spaces between man and God, Jesus being full righteousness himself, fills up the empty spaces which our limitations leave.

LIGHT NO. 3--(Matthew 20) Although man was a subject of God, he had through his sins sold himself to Satan, thereby becoming a servant of Satan. Jesus being God came to render as a man the service to God which was necessary to re-establish proper relationship between earth and heaven. Man was held for a ransom, which could be met only by Christ. He paid death the ransom fee and then captivated death itself.

LIGHT NO. 4-- (Hebrew) We learn also through the life of Christ, that he came to show us that if the men of flesh today, accept of the fulness of the spirit in their lives, they too can avoid sin by not yielding to the temptations.

Editorial Reflections

By Rev. S. A. Pleasants, D. D.
The stroke that was due man because of his sin, was received by Jesus. It was from the Father. No one could satisfy Him, but Christ Jesus. The Father had to be reconciled, and this reconciliation had to come from God the Son. God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself. The ocular demonstration of the death of Christ was shown in the death of the animals the skins of which were coats for Eve and Adam; also the death of Isaac by his father Abraham. These two show that not only was the Son given for the sins of the world of men, but the Father who gave Him also killed Him for us.

In this lesson verses 4-8 tell us of the tragic death of the Son of God by the Father for us. Because it was all done by the Father and Son, Jesus said, no one taketh my life from me, but I lay it down of myself. Certainly no created being could take the life of the Creator, had He not laid it down of Himself, we would all have been lost eternally. The only One, who could suffer enough for sin, and after such suffering, take again His life and give it to us for our salvation, was Jesus Christ.

The work of salvation in its fullest is known to the God-Head only. He revealed to us in the Bible of His Word enough for us to see, and know if His great love He had for us in giving and slaying His only Son to reconcile Himself, and give us eternal liberty.

The very name given Him tells us He is the One, who will save His people from their sins. All who are His, are saved eternally from their sins. Sins that are taken away from the children, who are in the family of God, are destroyed by the blood of Jesus, the One who saves His children from their sins. Any one, who is not saved from sin, is not saved by Jesus. Where sin is, there is no Eternal Life, and where Eternal Life is, there is no sin.

The law led to Christ, which was its mission. The prophets told of His coming, which was their mission. Both ended in Christ, who filled both full. The same One (Christ), who gave the law, and told the Prophets what to say while in His Spirit, before He was incarnated in human flesh, is the same One, who came and put into effect all that He said He would do, and said.

He changed the Gentile way of rulership. Christ said, the greatest ones be ruler by ministering unto the least. He said, this was the way He made. He was the greatest and He ministered unto all; not ministering only, but gave His Life a ransom for many. If this same thing was true today, our chaotic world would change.

Lesson VI.
February 8, 1948

WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT JESUS: HIS NATURE

SENIOR TOPIC: WHAT THINK YE OF CHRIST?
John 6:35-40; Colossians 1:9-20.
[[line]]]

AUTHORIZED VERSION

35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
36 But I have said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.
37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.
39 And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.
40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
9 For this cause we also, since the day we heard of it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;
10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;
11 Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and long-suffering with joyfulness;
12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints of light:
13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist:
18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the head; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;
20 And, having made peace through the blood of the cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

REVISED VERSION

35 Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall not hunger, and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. 36 But I said unto you, that ye have seen me, and yet believe not. 37 All that which the Father giveth me shall come unto me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. 38 For I am come down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. 39 And this is the will of him that sent me, that of all that which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise him up at the last day.

9 For this cause we also, since the day we heard of it, do not cease to pray and make request for you, that ye may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 to walk worthily of the Lord unto all pleasing, bearing fruit in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 strengthened with all power, according to the might of his glory, unto all patience and longsuffering with joy; 12 giving thanks unto the Father, who made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light; 13 who delivered us out of the power of darkness, and translated us into the kingdom of the Son of his love; 14 in whom we have our redemption, the forgiveness of our sins: 15 who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; 16 for in him were all things created, in the heavens and upon the earth, things visible and things invisible, whether thrones, or dominions or principalities or powers; all things have been created through him, and unto him; 17 and he is before all things, and in him all things consist. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. 19 For it was the good pleasure of the Father that in him should all the fulness dwell; 20 and through him to reconcile all things unto himself, having made peace through the blood of his cross; through him, I say, whether things upon the earth, or things in the heavens.
