Bureau of R. F. and A. L.
Franklin N. C. May 1st 1868.

Sir:

It is reported at this office that there are, among the Cherokee Indians at Quallatown. Jackson Co. fourteen orphan children, under twelve years of age, whose parents died of Small pox in 1865, and who are entirely dependent upon begging from door to door for means of Subsistence. As the people among whom they live are all very poor, this manner of living is necessarily very precarious.

I have the honor to request for the Above named orphans such aid as the Assistant Commissioner may be enabled to grant, either of public property or donations from benevolent associations.

Very Respectfully Your obt Servant
