E. R. Hampton maketh oath in due form of law before J M Bryon that on the night of April 28th he heard a noise begin at the Jail of the nature of a combat between Several persons while he was at the residence of N A Enloe that he ran out of Mr Enloe's house and heard somebody cry out murder and said that somebody was trying to kill him that the [[strikethrough]] crowd joined in pursuit [[/strikethrough]] Crowd pursued him to a fence about one hundred yards from the bridge over Tuckaseige river where the Crowd halted when he (Hampton) overtook them. They told Hampton that it was a negro man which he afterwards learned (named Henry Matthews) who had broken out of jail and they were trying to catch him and take him back to jail that after the crowd halted John Allison & James Common (freedmen) came up from toward the river that in the crowd that was after the negro he recognized Wm P Allman John Allman Wm Davis R M Wilson John Allison & James Common (Freedmen)
