Colonel

I have the honor to report that a great outrage was committed upon a freedmen, and his family, named [[underlined]] Jesse Garrett [[/underlined]], on the 4th of August near [[underlined]] Reidsville, Rockingham Co [[/underlined]] N. C. The facts as stated by [[underlined]] Garretts [[/underlined]] wife are as follows; - some-time ago [[underlined]] Garrett [[/underlined]] married a white woman (a widow with three children) which aggravated the citizens of the neighbor-hood very much, and they swore vengeance against the couple. About three weeks ago, they intended to move to a house rented from a citizen named [[underlined]] Philip Durham [[/underlined]], but before they were able to move to said [[underlined]] Durham's [[/underlined]] , the house was burned down, whereupon [[underlined]] Durham [[/underlined]] allowed them to move in his yard, until [[underlined]] Garrett [[/underlined]] could find a house to move in.
