En route- Catonia, Sicily.

 Tuesday, September 17, 1907 [[/preprinted]]

This morning we woke up sailing the "Mediterranean Blue." It was beautiful. The color of the water was the most beautiful blue imaginable and the sky overhead lovely as well. We passed Stromboli about eleven o'clock, the smoke pouring from it's crater. Saw several others, smaller , but quite a group in all. We got a last glimpse of Europe as we came through the straits of Messina, and as I write are anchored for the night in the harbor of Catania, Sicily.

We expect to go on shore in the morning.

Catania-en route

[[preprinted]] Wednesday, September 18, 1907 [[/preprinted]]

We took a turn through the dago town this morning. A lovely, dirty, filthy joint it was.

Sailed at 10.30 Had smooth weather until about three in the afternoon, when we ran into a small hurricane. I have absolutely no desire to see a large one. We got it good and plenty for a few choice moments, and it was rougher than anything we saw on the Atlantic for the rest of the day. I had an idea that the Mediterranean was a calm, placid lake. We learn new things every day we live.
