I roused myself this afternoon, and won from Smith 6-3. Smith had the sun in his eyes, but I had a game leg so I couldn't hardly more than walk, so it was more or less even up. I don't think Smith tried very hard the first few games, but when he did start and I had the lead, I held him back enough to win by three. Anyway, it was encouraging to me.

The Bedfordshires had their regimental games today. The maidan underwent quite a transformation, - a rather good quarter mile track being laid out, with all the fixin's. There was one man, head & shoulders above the rest, who won the 100, 220 & 440, and his last relay. He was pretty good pie. The camel race was quite interesting and presented an odd sight, - surely not one that can be seen in many places. The officers and the Tommies had a hammer & tongs tug of war, but [[strikethrough]]the[[/strikethrough]] Mulvaney and his gang were finally pulled over the line, despite the whiskey-and-soda training of their superiors. It wasn't a bad set of games, at all.
