else. It seems like an odd time to switch things around, right in the middle of a big procurement program.
Mat informed Evans over the phone today that the schedule Evans had offered, which cut down his steam output well below his stated steam capacity of 15 per month, was no good and he would have to get out maximum steam production to satisfy the Army Program. Whereupon Evans stated his capacity for diesels is now 4 per month instead of 3 (above 15 steam) which he indicated earlier this week (plus one fireless per month). Actually he never yet has turned out 19 locomotives per month or even remotely approached it over any period of time.
I worked all day on release waivers for December and runtime correspondence. I was on somewhat of a spot again today too. GE, according to written instructions from WPB, wrote in to say they have five stock 25 tonners coming out in January for which they have no orders. Reluctantly, I handed a copy of their letter and a spec they sent, to Grace and McLeod. But that is typical of the boxes a dollar a year man can get in down here. I would do the same thing for any other builder but because it is my company, I am liable to be accused by someone of being in here trying to sell GE stuff.
Another spot I was in today was helping Mat, at his insistence, work out a Porter schedule at 15 steam, 3 diesel and 1 fireless per month; I simply can't be here and keep completely away from Porter. And yet if I use my best judgment on it, I inevitably cross Evans and am in trouble. And yet something must give somewhere in his schedule. It is like trying to squeeze two bushels of apples into a one bushel basket.
