Mrs. Tate is in Philadelphia with daughter Jane who has a bad wisdom tooth, so [[underlined]] Mat [[/underlined]] was itching to go tonight and I invited him to join [[underlined]] Ab Butler [[/underlined]] and me.  We persuaded [[underlined]] Major McLeod [[/underlined]] to come with us to the Carlton for just two drinks before he went home.  We all sat down in the gilt lined cocktail lounge and went to work.  On the side, [[underlined]] Mat, [[/underlined]] unbeknownst to the rest of us, gave the waiter orders to "keep 'em coming," so it developed into four drinks before anyone got wise to the fact they had to be shut off.  After four rum collins, the Major didn't need much persuading to spend the evening with us but decided to phone his wife.  After what must have been an extremely earnest talk, he came back and [[underlined]] allowed he'd have to go home. [[/underlined]] It took great persuasion to prevent Mat from buying flowers for the Major to take home as a peace offering for being late to dinner, - "just a bunch of flowers for a Kappa Sig Brother" Mat kept pleading.  The Major's argument was that she would "know I'm drunk, if I did that!"  So the Major left us about 7PM with much mutual regret. 

[[underlined]] Mat then proposed we have "just one drink" in [[/underlined]] every bar between the Carlton and the Del Rio, where we had decided to dine.  I agreed if I could choose the [[underlined]] route [[/underlined]] (Mat having indicated certain places that would have routed us approximately via the Lincoln Memorial).  We made the Lafayette first where Mat first practically insulted the waitress when he found "Miss Roanoke" now works days.  He promptly made amends by tipping the waitress one dollar before we started.  We sat at the same table where Henry Guy met his downfall a couple of weeks ago and that made Mat [[underlined]] sentimental over Henry [[/underlined]] - nothing would do but we
