Jack phoned me in my room at the hotel; he was tight drunk and wanted a job with GE - said he had resigned his position as of Dec. 31st. I told him to come around and see me tomorrow, knowing he would never remember anything about it.

I had [[red pencil underline]] dinner with Ed and Vic after a drink in their rooms, [[/red pencil underline]] and got to my room at [[red pencil underline]] 9 PM for a quiet eve of my leaving. [[/red pencil underline]] I had a faint desire to do something tonight, my last night, but didn't want to go to Hogsett's place, knowing it would leave a horrible taste in my mouth. If [[red pencil underline]] Mat or Marshall [[/red pencil underline]] had been in town, I believe we would have had a little blowout - but probably it is just as well.

En route to Erie,
Wednesday, Dec. 30, '42.

[[red pencil underline]] My last WPB breakfast was eaten at the Wardman Park with Ed, Vic and Dick Packard. [[/red pencil underline]] Ed and I took our bags to the station and then went back to the Shoreham [[/red pencil underline]] Bldg. where, with some [[red underline]]embarrassment, I gave Florence Peters the Indian pin [[/red pencil underline]] and tried to explain the circumstances. [[red pencil underline]] "Cap" Hom [[/red pencil underline]] greeted us and told me [[red pencil underline]] Shap is [[/pencil underline]] coming down next week to look into taking a locomotive application job with the [[red pencil underline]] Army Transportation Corps. In a way, I should be glad [[/red pencil underline]] to see Shap take the job which would leave me free at Erie to go after our whole locomotive picture including the mining jobs and do as I please without the interference and friction that has always existed with Shap there.
[[red underline]]Ed and I got flowers for Stevenson and I enclosed a[[/red underline]] little note telling him [[red underline]]I was sorry not to see him again before leaving[[/red underline]] and wishing him an early recovery. [[red underline]]Thus occurred my last contact with him before[[/red underline]] I left WPB. [[red underline]]Maybe some day I shall regret[[/red underline]] my decision not [[red underline]]to become his Deputy Director but[[/red underline]] only time can [[red underline]]tell that.[[/red underline]]
