En route to Erie, Pa.
Friday, Aug. 28, 1942.

Babbie is 14 today and I not there but I'm on my way. Today was one of cleaning up odds and ends. I got the [[underline]] G.E. release okayed by Stevenson [[/underline]] and I guess it will go out all right. I had them well tied down to mostly standard locomotives - a good program and one nobody could possibly find any fault with.

Today we were all presented with a photostat copy of the [[underline]] Organization Chart of the Branch [[/underline]] and there I was as one of the Ass't. Chiefs to Charlie, in charge of the Industrial Locomotive Section. If Whitey ever saw it he probably would have a fit because it sounds like a lot of authority. Marsh Raymond is Asst Chief in charge of the Big Locomotive Section, and Vic Rennix in charge of material section.

The diesel engine situation is back in my lap again - [[underline]] Stevenson wants me to see Cherry, [[/underline]] Chief of Construction Machinery, to try to get an allocation of engines - apparently they have given up the idea of trying to get a Requirements Committee determination. I see Cherry Monday.

Vic and I had a delightful luncheon at Allies Inn eating out in the garden back of the second floor, under a colored umbrella with flowers around us and the birds singing in the trees over us - not much like war. It has been wonderfully cool in Washington all this week and I have enjoyed my morning walk to work over through the park opposite the Whitehouse and down around the State Dept. to Allies Inn, where I meet Vic, Ed and Mat for breakfast.

[[underline]] Jack Carey bought me a scotch [[/underline]] while I packed this evening. [[underline]] We are going to try to line up a little party [[/underline]] next week for the boys in [[underline]] Arch Torry's grand piano [[/underline]] IGE suite at the Carlton - [[underline]] Joe Rowbottom has been razzing me heavily about my failure to effect such a [[/underline]] party. Met Earl and Mat on the 6:55 for home.
