Dear Germain:

Thank you for your letter of the 27th of November reporting to me about the cleaning of the Goya and enclosing the bill for the same, and also for the separate package which you sent me of the photograph[[strikethrough]] s [[/strikethrough]] of the picture after it has been cleaned.

Judging from the details that show on the photograph [[strikethrough]]s[[/strikethrough]], I can well imagine how wonderful the picture itself must look. When I look at the photograph [[strikethrough]] s [[/strikethrough]], I am very much tempted to withdraw my agreement with you to sell it. However, as I do not want to play fast and loose with you, I will not change what we have agreed upon, but do warn you that when the date of March ist, 1952, arrives, and if per chance you have done nothing by that time, it is more than likely that I will withdraw the opportunity I am giving you of disposing of the same. When I consider how this is practically the only picture ^[[of Goya]] of its kind and quality that I have seen during some years outside of Museums, I just wonder whether we have put the price high enough. Certainly, I will accept nothing less than $75,000 and leave it to your judgement to see whether you can accomplish more. Aside from the companion piece that Reinhardt of Switzerland has, and which by the way I like less than mine, there is certainly no picture of a Bullfight by Goya that can compare with it. However, I need not mention all this to you because you certainly know it better than I do.

I have written to the Public National Bank to send you a remittance of $165 for the cleaning of the picture, and have no doubt the same will reach you the day after these lines arrive at your office.

As far as a new frame is concerned, I will certainly not go into that. The amount involved is negligible compared to the price of the picture and, in case a new frame is needed, the new buyer will have the chance of selecting something according to his taste. Anyway, I would not want a new frame on the picture without being there to select it myself.

I heard from San Francisco that the Memling has been forwarded to you and look forward to your advice when you receive the same.

With kindest regards,

Sincerely yours,
