Dear Mr. Mahon:

How very considerate of you to have so promptly answered my note in such detail.

You truly did not need to go this trouble for if I made a slight reservation about Professor Gnudi it was simply to call your attention to a possible misplaced pride, but your mainiaining your original views was indeed enough of a reason to convince me.

And now that you have explained so fully regarding Professor Gnudi there cannot be the slightest doubt in my mind that you should proceed as you previously suggested.

I am unable to give you an answer as to whether Professor Suida left a copy of the photograph of the whole painting at the Bologna Pinacoteca, as having alluded to the subject I realized it was a little vague in his mind and it would mean a considerable amount of research on his part to see whether he had given it up or kept it.

I am therefore sending you another photograph of the whole picture ^[[(1)]]. You will thus be in a position to send it to Professor Gnudi concurrently with the detailed ones.

As regards the further tracing of the English provenance I am sorry to say that I did not succeed in obtaining any further data towards which my original efforts were directed.

I appreciate indeed the time you took and the care with which you investigated this matter, and may I say that I am impressed with the clarity of the "case" you have made.

With renewed thanks and looking forward to hearing from you and with personal regards,

^[[ (1) within the next few days]] Sincerely yours,

(Germain Seligman)
