December 17th. 1955

Dear Mr. Mahon:

Is there not a saying that "Friendly spirits meet"? I was just about to write to you when your good lines of December 5th, reachhedd me this morning and for it do have my thanks.

One of the first purposes was to let you know how impressed and most interested I was by your catalogue of the "17th Century in Rome". It was rather difficult to obtain a copy, hence the delay.

I also thought you might enjoy receiving a photograph of my recent purchase of"The Annunciation" by Strozzi. It is probably well known to you, as it came from London and I feel certain that you keep abreast of everything appearing in this particular field of art. I find it indeed most striking, particularly the representation of the dynamical ebullience of the scene, generally depicted in an atmosphere of serenity and calm. Both Prof. Longhi a nd Fiocco date it about the time when Strozzi Left Genoa for Venice. Do you agree?

In a round about way, for it also came from Colnaghi, where it was I understand a couple of years ago, I purchased a truly lovely Crespi - all golden - of "Jael and Sisera". Whence it came before being in the hands of Colnaghi, I do not know.

I shall be probably be going over to Europe in the early part of January, heading first for the Continent and I do hope to be able to spend a few days in London before returning, where I hope to have the pleasure of seeing you again.

With all good wishes for Christmas and the New Year, and with best personal regards,

Sincerely yours,

Germain Seligman
