Pietro Toesca. Venezia 31 .551. 42.

"It is not a duplicate of the "Venus of Urbino", not in thr Uffizi Gallery, it is a^[[n]] original variation that Titian himself composed from his greatest masterpiece, which, especially in his colouring carries the signature of the Master.
The "Venus of Urbino" has been painted by Titian, in 1538, finding in its graduation, of soft colouring, the suitable vibrations which give to the beautiful woman, the pulsations of life.
This is the quality of coloring, which has hardly been touched by time,, and remains in the present work .in which the variaeties of the draperies, and of hte other particulars is found in the same model of the masterpiece of the "Uffizi Gallery, painted with the same sense of colour, by the same Master. in the same pose, with the same traits, mixing with the religios gravity of Giorgione, his own sensual phantasy
Here, every thing is changed. In the background of the Venus of Urbino, by others strangely supposed to be the po^[[r]]trait of the Duchess of Urbino, nacked.
Removing [[crossed through]]the[[\crossed through]] scenario, of the deep room, in which the maid^[[s]] carry the gowwns of the beeutiful cou^[[t]]esan, here we find a lan^[[d]]scape full of storm, life in the sky, in the impuls of vegetation, in the lights in the background, and on rge two satyrs which watch the sleeper. In th^[[i]]s background, the colourin^[[g]] is so firy, and daring; to b^[[e]] even compar^[[ed]] to th^[[a]]t of ten years later the "Venus of Urbino. Notwithsatnding, it joins so harmoniously with the first plan of the picture,, which delicac^[[y]] it gives strength.
We know from Jacopo Palma il ^[[Giovvme]], that Titian used t^[[o]] keep his works for years, and finish them after much time,
It can be supposed, that this work, may have been a firs^[[t]] idea of the Venus of Urbino, and been finished by Titian, putt^[[ing]] the distinct harmonious and quite original touches of his own hand .^[[in]] two moments of his wonderful art.
