My dear Hans:
I have your letter of November 18th and am glad to know that you are in this country again. I did not go to Europe for a variety of reasons, of which I will tell you later. I am glad to know you are coming to Washington and, so far as I know, I expect to be here all of next week. I hope you will come to lunch with me and let me hear all the news of Europe and what you have been doing the past summer.

I know nothing about the Moro painting which you say Sir Joseph Duveen has sent to Washington for Mr. Mellon's inspection. We have been so busy here with other matters that the cause of art has had to go by the boards for a few weeks. I was extremely sorry about the Metternich portrait and also regretted that it was so long in being returned to you, but that seemed unavoidable.

With kind regards, and hoping to see you in Washington soon, I am

Sincerely yours,
