Dear Mr. Eastman:

Although I have not had the pleasure of seeing you for quite some time, the last occasion being when you saw me at Scott & Fowles in connection with the Manship sun-dial, I never-the-less am taking the liberty of writing you these lines. I presume that you received the notice that I had severed my connection with that firm at the beginning of this year to become associated with Jacques Seligmann & Co., whose name is undoubtedly well know to you, as, besides being represented in many well known collections and museums in the United States, my firm brought together the greater part of the famous Pierpont Morgan collection.

The reason for my writing you this letter, however, is to call your attention to probably what is generally considered one of the most important paintings, both historically and artistically, that has been brought to this country in recent years. It is a portrait of Francis 1st., by one of the greatest painters of the period, and is looked upon both by Dr. Valentiner and Dr. Freidlander, as the best portrait they have ever seen of this monarch.

You may be interested to know that there are only five authenticated portraits of Francis 1st., one being in the Louvre, another at Hampton Court, a third in the Johnson Collection in Philadelphia, and two other unimportant ones in private collections.
