Pressed against the Saint's head, and fish play gaily in the current the Holy pair are crossing.

This statue is in a remarkable state of preservation. However, it had been broken at the level of the left knee - the left leg has been replaced by one in plaster. To reinforce the figure a steel stem was applied to the back.

#8149 ROSSELINO, Antonio (1427 Settigano - 1479 Florence)

[[underlined]] "MADONNA AND CHILD" [[\underline]]

Marble bas-relief, Florentine work of the 15th century, ca. 1460-1470.

Height: 22-3/4" x Width: 15".

Halos encircle the heads of the Madonna and the Baby Jesus whom She holds on Her left. She is calm and lovely, the Child full of life with a smile on His lips. His tiny hands are about Mary's neck - one on the cords which fasten Her cloak at the throat, the other on Her headdress. She is shown to the waist and the Christ-child in full, one of His feet resting on Mary's hand. In the background, in almost flat relief, are two cherubs floating in clouds.

Inventory numbers in red on the marble from the Prince of Liechtenstein's records, 137 and F.350.
