A. R. L. Carroll, Esq.,
c/o The T. Eaton Co.,
Toronto, Canada.

Dear Carroll,

In answer to your letter of the 19th instant, I am sending you thiscommunication by special delivery, as I know you are in a hurry to get the particulars.

Although you have seen the picture, I am giving you the description again to refreshen your memory.

It is a portrait by Judith LEYSTER, who, as you know, was the foremost pupil of Franz HALS, and probably one of the greatest woman painters that has ever lived, although curiously enough, there has not been much written about her, in spite of the fact that many of her works were so good that they have been attributed to the Master, himself. Our picture shows a young woman with a tambourine in a three-quarter pose. She is seen full face, smiling. She wears a dark green hat trimmed with a plume and a bright red dress trimmed with black braid. In her right hand, she holds a tambourine, and in her left hand, castanets. From the Collection of the Dowager Van Halphen (The Hague). Authenticated by Dr. Friedlander, copy of which is herewith enclosed.

We are now asking $20,000.- for this picture which is less than we were asking for it last year, but as we are very anxious to do business with you and should like to help you as much as we possibly can, we will be prepared to make you a special price of $15,000.- which is 25% of our asking price.

I think this is about all I can tell you about it inasmuch as you have seen the picture, and therefore, awaiting to hear from you again, and with my kind regards, believe me to be

Yours sincerely,

Encl-1
