Edgar B. Whicomb, Esq.,
525 Woodward Ave.,
Detroit, Mich.

Dear Mr. Whitcomb,

Thank you very much for your kind lines of February 16th, and I am very sorry to hear of the serious condition of Mrs. Whitcomb's mother. I sincerely hope everything will turn out all right.

In regard to the charming portrait of Mrs. West by Benjamin WEST, the measurements of the canvas without the frame are 27-3/4" by 23". Do you think that even this is too large for your house? As to the frame, we easily could have a smaller one made. Unfortunately, a good photograph of the picture is not yet ready, but if you wuold take the trouble to ask Dr. Neil of the Museum, we will be glad to show you one, as I have sent one to him.

Should you still be uncertain about your coming to New York, and should you like the photograph of this painting and you consider the measurements suitable, I should be glad to send the picture to your house on approval to give you an opportunity to see the original hanging there, so that you can see at once whether it is too large for the space you have in mind or not, a thing which does not give you any obligation whatsoever. I should very much like to see this picture in your collection, as I think it would fit in beautifully and complete the different periods.

Trusting these lines are satisfactory to you, and looking forward to your kind decision, believe me, dear Mr. WHitcomb, to be

Yours very sincerely,

(Rolf H. Waegen)
