MASHER PUMMELED BY YOUNG WOMEN
[[mid length line]]

When a Man Seizes Girl About Waist and Attempts to Kiss Her She and Companion Put Up Valiant Battle and Rout Assailant.
[[mid length line]]

Two young women gave a masher a fight for his life last night at the corner of Byron and North Robey streets. They were Miss Edna Behm and Miss Cecelia Lucas, both 18 years of age, and living at 1916 Eddy street. The masher, who is described as being about 30 years old, fled to escape further punishment and possible hat pin stabs.

The girls were returning from church when they noticed a man in the shadow of a tree near the corner. They paid little attention to him until he started to walk toward them. When within a few feet of the girls he darted towards Miss Behm, grabbed her around the waist and attempted to kiss her. She shielded her face with on hand and with the other struck him several blows in the face.

Miss Lucas proved even a better fighter than her friend. With both arms free she scratched and punched the man's face. Miss Lucas held on long enough to give him a few extra punches, but Miss Behm was ready to five up the struggle at the first sign of retreat on the part of the masher. He was off in a hurry, once he was free, running north on Robey street.

AVIATORS MUST NOT "ROOST" IN PARK

Max Lillie Is Taken Into Custody by Bluecoats When With Daring Young Girl Companion He Drops on Recreation Grounds.
[[short line]]

Pestiferous aviators buzzing around are beginning to make life miserable for Grant park policemen.

Following the arrest of Farnum Fish for alighting on the lake front green without a permit last week, Max Lillie, another of the species, was twice detained by the protectors of the park and air above for the same offense yesterday.

"We'll not have this park made a roosting perch for any kind of strange bird that happens to want to squat, feather or canvas," said Sergeant Hollie, who headed the band of bluecoated hunters that first captured the aerial intruder.

Lillie's infraction of park regulations occurred in connection with the four-day aviation meet at the Cicero flying field and the opening of the Columbia Yacht club season. He left the field without the permission of the management, and neglected to secure permission for a place to alight near the clubhouse in Grant park.

Young Woman in Machine.

In the seat beside him on his trip was the daring young Miss Katherine Stinson, a pupil at the flying field. Being warned by the management that if he left the field and flew across Chicago his license would be taken from him, Lillie said he would go around the city. Hence his course went from the field on the western fringe of the city, far to the south, along the Indiana line and north over Jackson park to Grant park, where the two landed gracefully early in the afternoon.

Not long after congratulations had been tendered and Lillie had delivered a letter to Commodore T. J. Quaile of the yacht club, Sergeant Hollie, with Policemen W. H. Jones

Special Dispatch to The Inter Ocean.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., May 30.——After leading all the way from the start to the 198th lap, Ralph de Palma's Mercedes developed engine trouble, and Joe Dawson's National came up from six laps behind today and won the second international 500 mile sweepstakes automobile race in the record time of 6:21:06.

Teddy Tetzlaff's Fiat was second. The Stutz company protested the awarding of third place to Hughie Hughes' Mercer, contending their car, driven by Charles Merz, which was announced as fourth, won the position.

No Serious Accident.

The day was ideal for the motor fans, and not a serious accident marred the sport. Bob Burman, whose Cutting turned over in the back stretch when a rear wheel collapsed, left the hospital with a few scratches after a slight treatment and vied the finish of the race.

Twenty-four cars, the pick of American, German, English and Italian factories, started.

A Lexington, driven by Harry Knight, the hero of last year's race, who deliberately wrecked his car to avoid running down the driver of another car who had fallen on the track was the first to quit, dropping out in its seventh lap.

David Bruce-Brown was the next to [[cut off]]
