Sept. 17 - a second look at the 61st

S.F. annual.  There are hundreds of paintings here - many, many of them really bad, a few good, but not one I would consider excellent. Everything is so self-consciously executed, so banal, so insistent on trying to (1) say something or (2) say nothing.

A balcony-bay scene: and the inevitable curled-up eat-in foreground. A good storm scene: and of course the dark cloud over frail sailingcraft.

There is much cubist painting here - so much of it that you can say, at last, "anyone can do a thing like that."

Technique here is first class; color combination
