Tricolor has a long pointed wing phoeniceus" a rounded one (This includes a.g. californicus). in californicus the middle wing coverts are black or mainly black, sometimes vary to orange tipped with black. Case of the Pacific coast Redwings seems involved and there is good basis

for contention of Mailliard that californicus is a subspecies of phoeniceus. The range of this form bears this out.
In [[underlined]] tricolor [[/underlined]] the bill is elongate & slender. In the male the middle coverts are white or cinnamon. The female is dark below like the female of [[underlined]] californicus [[/underlined]].
