Mrs. Oliver Seth of Santa Fe, New Mexico

Mrs. Seth was born in the Southwest; her father was from Scotland and her mother from Kentucky. Her early schooling was in Santa Fe, and she earned a scholarship to Mills College.

During the was she worked for the FBI as a secretary in New York.

She returned to Santa Fe to marry Oliver Seth, a native Santa Fean and graduate of Stanford University and Yale Law School. They have always lived in Santa Fe. Judge Seth is Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the 10th District -- a four-state area.

Mrs. Seth has been chairman of the Women's Board of the School of American Research and on the boards of the Museum of New Mexico, Santa Fe Opera Guild and the Santa Fe Opera in its formative years.

Other interests include Santa Fe Garden Club, Women's Golf Association and Deacon in the Presbyterian Church.

For many years Judge and Mrs. Seth have been collectors of the choice of work of the Pueblo Indians, Spanish-American and American artists who regularly visited the area. This interest resulted in the establishment of an art gallery some 12 years ago, which now represents over 80 artists primarily from that part of the country. It is a lively, bright and busy gallery. This June, Mrs. Seth is retiring and will turn the gallery over to her daughter.

Mrs. Seth has made a substantial contribution to the artistic, creative and cultural life of Santa Fe. She has the imagination and knowledge to make an important contribution to this Commission and the National Collection, I feel sure. But I must add that although she has not been a close, personal friend -- she is an admired acquaintance!
