National Collection of Fine Arts
Contemporary Paintings

For the National Collection of Fine Arts, a major group of contemporary, American paintings was acquired in March 1980 from Vincent Melzac. Ten paintings were purchased by the Museum and sixteen more were donated by the collector. The range of works covers the Washington Color School and the New York School of both the first and second generations. Among the paintings are four important works by Morris Louis, one work by Alan Fenton, and one by Jules Olitski. None of these artists was represented in the collection previously. Other works include major paintings by Willem de Kooning, Clyfford Still, Kenneth Noland and Franz Kline, as well as important works by Milton Resnick, Michael Goldberg and Howard Mehring. With this significant addition to its holdings, the National Collection extends its presentation of post-war American paintings and solidifies its position as a repository of American art of all periods.
