As reported at the May meeting, the Institution was required by OMB to amend its original request submitted to Congress in January by a reduction of $1,522,000 with the actual application of the cut to be determined by the Institution.  Of this reduction, $722,00 was applied against the Salaries and Expenses request, primarily in the areas of pay and inflation, while the balance of $800,000 was applied against the request for Restoration and Renovation of Buildings.

House action on the amended budget was very favorable with reductions of slightly over $2.0 million being limited to five specific areas:

The requested increase of $531,000 for the Tropical Research Institute was reduced by $102,000, related to security expenses and conservation/education research. | $102,000

Computer support for the International Environmental Program was reduced. |   50,000

The new Smithsonian National Awareness Program was eliminated. |  600,000
    
In the Special Foreign Currencies Program, a requested $750,000 was denied for the forward funded reserve for the American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS) and the regular grant program was reduced by $50,000. |  800,000
