[[underlined]] Gallery for Special Exhibitions--The Thomas M. Evans Hall [[/underlined]]

The Secretary reported that the Smithsonian is realizing its long time dream in creating a new gallery for special temporary and travelling exhibitions in the National Museum of Natural History/Museum of Man, in space formerly occupied by the Museum's Bicentennial Exhibition. This new facility of approximately 14,000 square feet will feature fabric-covered walls, a movable partition system, a new ceiling to accommodate a variety of lighting, and new flooring. Construction of the gallery is scheduled to be completed by late April, in time for the installation of the first exhibition, "5000 Years of Korean Art."

This project is being financed by Mr. Thomas M. Evans' donation of $300,000, coupled with approximately $150,000 of the Institution's restoration and renovation funds. In view of Mr. Evans' timely generosity making this gallery possible, the Secretary suggested that the facility bear Mr. Evans' name. It should be noted that Mr. Evans' contributions to the Smithsonian since 1975 have amounted to more than $1,000,000.

It has been the policy of the Board of Regents to reserve to itself the naming of any Smithsonian facility for an individual. Accordingly the Regents approved the following motion:

VOTED that the Board of Regents, in recognition of the timely generosity of his donation, names the new temporary exhibition gallery in the National Museum of Natural History/Museum of Man as the Thomas M. Evans Hall.
