As a result of the consultations, Messrs. Hughes and Challinor have recently recommended to the Secretary that such activities as the National Anthropological Film Center, the Research Institute for Immigration and Ethnic Studies, the Folklife Program, the Handbook of North American Indians, and the Department of Anthropology might be associated under a National Museum Of Man. An acting Associate Director of this new entity is to be appointed and will be responsible for the day-to-day direction under Dr. Richard Fiske, now Director of both the Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Man. A permanent Associate Director will be sought in the current year.

It is expected that this new administrative framework will both foster the traditional Smithsonian activities in the man-related disciplines and nurture new initiatives to bring the Institution to the forefront of these important disciplines. New resources will be sought in the ensuing years to enhance the new emphasis being given to these activities.
