The Board of Regents and the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution with great pleasure and deep gratitude present the Corporate Founders' Medal to David Rockefeller and The Chase Manhattan Bank in recognition of their donation to the Smithsonian Institution of the magnificent "Chase Manhattan Bank Money Collection." Numbering over 100,000 items and universally regarded as one of the foremost numismatic collections ever assembled in the United States, this signal gift weds the twin concepts of the public interest and corporate philanthropy to the opportunities for scholarship and exhibition that the Smithsonian provides.

Mr. Rockefeller thanked the Secretary and spoke briefly about the significance of that donation as an instance of public and private partnership which is embodied in the Smithsonian.

The Secretary then presented to the Honorable Lucien N. Nedzi a piece of smithsonite from Namibia and a handsomely prepared citation which read as follows:

With great admiration, the Board of Regents and the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution present to the Honorable Lucien N. Nedzi of the State of Michigan this sample smithsonite, named for our Founder, as a token of their deep appreciation for his abiding interest in the programs of the Institution. As Chairman of the Subcommittee on Libraries and Memorials of the House of Representatives from the 92nd through the 96th Congresses, Lucien Nedzi carried out his legislative oversight responsibilities with scrupulous evenhandedness and with unfailing courtesy.

In these ten years he presided over the approval of numerous pieces of legislation of critical importance to the well-being of the Institution. None of our friends on the Hill have been more realistic in their judgement nor more generous and articulate in their support of the Smithsonian. The Board of Regents and the administration of the Institution thank you and wish you and your family well in the years ahead.
