While primary attention has been given to individual prospects associated with the Smithsonian or of considerable private wealth, a major corporate and foundation gift campaign has also been initiated. Particular emphasis is being directed to corporate affiliations of all current and past National Associates Board members and to foundations having particular interest in the art and culture of Africa, Asia and the Near East. Three major proposals each in excess of $1,000,000 have been submitted to date and expectations are that an additional $5 million will be forthcoming in gifts from this sector.

To broaden efforts with individual, corporate, and foundation gift prospects, a series of regional functions have been scheduled at which the Secretary will present the Quadrangle complex and the concepts behind it to local leadership in preparation for subsequent face-to-face solicitations. Visits to several major metropolitan areas are expected before the end of the calendar year. In addition, a broad general appeal, probably in late spring or early summer 1983, will be directed to all Smithsonian Associates, through the [[underlined]] Smithsonian [[/underlined]] magazine, possibly reinforced by a direct-mail campaign.

Foreign gifts continue to be actively solicited in Morocco, the Philippines, Kuwait, OMan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and other nations of Southeast Asia. Support will also be sought from U. S. corporations with business interests in the various African nations.

At the Secretary's invitation, Mr. Brakeley stated that the fund raising is going very well, with over half of the objective in hand. He expressed his confidence that the funds required to meet the Institution's share of the total costs will indeed be available, mostly in cash, on schedule.
