Dear Sir,

I would respectfully inform you that I was a soldier in the service of the U. S. Army. 

I was a private in Capt. E. A. Davis' Company "F" 3rd N. C. Infantry Volunteers Third Regiment commanded by Colonel George W. Kirk.  I served from the (1) first Day of January 1865 to the (8) eighth Day of August 1865.

having performed my Tour of service and having never received my Bounty nor Payment for Service, I make this inquiry of You, for the Proper information relative to the obtaining my Dues. If the Verity of this letter is suspicioned, I have = the Papers & witnesses.
