April 10th 1869

J.C.C. Vogel Esq
Superintendent of Education

Dear Sir

Yours of April 7th asking for information relative to the House and Lot occupied by Mrs J. P. R. Hanly is before me.

In reply I would say that I have not deemed it necessary to visit the premises being well acquainted with them.

Mrs Hanlys estimate is too high, not perhaps on the cost to her, but as to what it would bring in the market.

Mrs Hanly unfortunately for her came to this place when the prejudice against the Freedman and all connected with them was very strong. She paid high for materials and labour. So that the property cost her too much. But allowing a high price for everything I cannot estimate the cost to her at more than $1800, or $2000 at the outside, and for that Sum a lot can be bought and a building erected, which would be far more suitable and better adapted, according to the laws of health
