1st I think the first Nez Perce who saw a White face was a woman who had been taken captive in some battle fought with other tribes. one in the buffalo country (Montana) perhaps she was taken to Brittish America. She escaped & found her way back to tell of the strange people she had seen with white faces. [[underlined]] green [[/underlined]] eyes & hair - from her description they were called soyappo or (Crowned Ones) - then when Lewis & Clark came among them they knew they were [[strikethrough]] at once [[strikethrough]] the Crowned ones & treated them kindly.

2nd I think they sent two FlatHeads & two Nez Perce to St. Lo.for the Book. I think they sent these men in 1832 or 33. Spaulding? arrived [[underlined]] here [[/underlined]] in 1836 there was some delay in the Sending.

They heard about the Book first over in the buffalo country from a [[underlined]] Foreigner? [[/underlined]]. perhaps (a Jesuit)& then [[underlined]] more [[/underlined]] from King Georges Men Hudson Bay Co.

The Dr White you ask about. I [[underlined]] can not help you [[/underlined]]. think it must be [[underlined]] Gray [[/underlined]] instead of White = I can find out when Mr [[Lay?]] came & all about him from his daughter Mrs Abernathy of Portland. She called upon me
